DAYS 1 - 3 From Kenya’s metropolis of Nairobi, cross into the wide horizons and vast open plains of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The park's 320 sq km is home to an abundance of wildlife and provides some of the most evocative landscapes in Africa. From your camp on the edge of the Mara, explore the park in search of Africa's finest wildlife, and lions are often seen in large prides stalking their traditional prey of antelope, wildebeest and zebra. In addition there are large populations of elephant, cheetah, leopard, buffalo and hippo, and if you are here between July and September, you may be lucky to witness the annual migration of grazing animals, easily one of the most incredible movements of animals on earth. From the Mara explore Lake Naivasha, before travelling south across the Namanga border into Tanzania
DAYS 4 - 8
The first stop in Tanzania is the flourishing and colourful city of Arusha, situated exactly mid-point between Cape Town and Cairo. After the open plains of the game parks, Arusha is a contrast containing perhaps a million people nestling in the shadow of Mount Meru (4556m), and exploring the bustling local markets is a fabulous 'African' experience and barter hard for those curios. From your base just outside Arusha at the Meserani Snake Park, get wrapped up with a snake or two, or take a walk out to a local Masai village to learn a little more about the proud and ancient Masai culture. Swapping from overland truck to more suitable smaller 4x4s, continue west to visit Olduvai Gorge to get a glimpse of pre historic man before continuing to the majestic Serengeti that covers an area of over 15,000 sq. km of endless plains and millions of hoofed animals. Camping out in the park is an exhilarating experience and its a case of who’s watching who in the darkened bush. After game driving in the Serengeti, descend the outer walls of Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site with one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa. At 326 sq. km Ngorongoro is Africa's biggest intact caldera, and from the the crater rim (2,400m) the view to the floor (700m below and some 16km from side to side) is staggering.

DAYS 9 - 13 From Arusha continue southeast and reach Tanzania's main commercial city , Dar es Salaam (meaning 'haven of peace') on the balmy coast. A sprawling city with its colonial past apparent in the wide tree lined boulevards, its a good place to pick up makonde (ebony carvings) at the frenzied local markets before catching a ferry to the exotic spice island - Zanzibar. Spend three nights on the evocative island with its idyllic, sandy palm fringed beaches, romantic winding cobbled alleys and lush tropical forest. Once the most important town on the East African coast, it was centre for trade in spices, slaves and a base for 19th century explorers, and the influence of both African and Arab past is visible in the eclectic architecture. In Stone Town, visit the old slave markets, 'Prison Island', mosques, palaces, courtyards and the quaint shops and bazaars offering anything from brightly coloured sarongs to delectable seafood snacks. A visit to the white sands of the northern beaches is sure to recharge the senses, and snorkelling and diving are excellent in the area around Nungwi. Returning to the mainland, our tour ends on return to Dar Es Salaam.
